Marin's Movie Mania

          The next movie, Fantasia, saw everyone coming back. However, due to a combination of caffeine wearing off, my lack of enjoyment of operatic music, and the film not having a narrative or characters, which broke my arbitrary systems we made the decision to skip it, and watch Who Framed Roger Rabbit later in its place, at the request of M, who is a massive fan of both movies. All this being said, the visuals of Fantasia are fantastic, and according to people who enjoy the style of music the movie employs, that too is amazing.          Moving onto the bulk of this review, and the film we ended up watching; Dumbo. As far as I can tell, the only thing most people remember about Dumbo is the flying elephant, and the bad trip scene, which is fair, because the rest of the film is passable at best. I have a soft spot for the small, somewhat annoying companion character, and  Timothy Q. Mouse is an excellent example of this, and...

          Following the relative fun of Snow White, everyone but me decided to sit out on  Pinocchio, a decision I cannot blame them for. It's not that this film is bad, it's just that the source material only offers so much, and without adding significant artistic liberties to it, the pacing of a children's book doesn't mesh with that of a movie.            The real issue with  Pinocchio is the last twenty odd minutes of the movie, focus on the whale Monstro, who, upon Jimminy and Pinocchio's return home, is revealed to have eaten Geppetto. This isn't itself a problem, the problem is as  Pinocchio  searches for his father, the movie drags its feet, taking over half the remaining run time before they're reunited, spent talking to fish in increasingly repetitive and annoying ways, only for five minutes to be spent in the escape, return home, and resolution.          All this...

         Snow White was the first movie I watched, and all three of my wonderful companions made an appearance, referred to from here on out as B, F, and M. We all had quite a cozy time with it, and spirits were high on completion.           It was, in a lot of ways, the perfect starting point. It's a good movie, but not a great one. It's missing much of a real plot or any characters beyond the single trait each has that could truly elevate the film. But it doesn't really need to be elevated. As Disney's first full length film, it's more of a statement that they could  make something like this, and, for this blog, a useful measuring tool to balance other movie off of.           I don't think it's constructive to discuss how a movie like this has aged. It is important to acknowledge that parts of it could be seen as reductive, yes. But so many other people have done that, and my voice isn't helpful ...

          Over the course of 25 days starting on the 2nd of March 2025, I set out to watch 100 Disney and Pixar movies, a journey of pain, joy, tears, blood, and madness. To help me through this hell of my own making, I recruited three absolute saints whom I have forced man made horrors beyond our comprehension upon, and deserve absolutely all the thanks for helping out. I accomplished it on the 27th, finishing with a significantly less stable grip on reality, and a need to do something with that experience           This Blog is that something. I’ll be going from 1937’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, to 2025’s Moana 2 and discussing what I like, what I dislike, and what drives me insane. I’ll be aiming for weekly updates on Sunday, but I will be liable to slip up, or post them early if they're done. If I don't like a movie you do, it's not a personal attack, it's my personal opinion on a piece of art. I have terrible taste....
